Rosa Parks
In the garden, After School
Global Gardens serves approximately 30 students in a free program every afternoon from 3:30-5 at Rosa Parks Elementary. In the spring of 2008 the students explored what a garden is and how they could use it to better their school and community. As a result, in April 2008 a garden was tilled behind the school and was dedicated as a place of peace for the community during the Celebration of Hope, an event orchestrated by the students.
Students committed to the after-school program have their own plot in the garden, which they are responsible for developing and maintaining under the direction of the Global Gardens staff and volunteers.
Our after-school program functions as a community, beginning each day eating an after-school snack together before sharing our goals for the day as a group. After an afternoon of working, playing and dreaming we end the day with an appreciation circle.
